The Best Village in The World (Maaliman paras kylä)

A lively tale about a self-sustaining community that’s founded by the son of a dying arsonist.

Planet Earth on the threshold of the 21st century. The world is threatened with economic collapse, cities are disappearing under mountains of garbage, and the third world war is looming. On his deathbed, former arsonist Asser Toropainen asks his grandson to do something about the churches he’s spent his life burning down. And so Eemil builds a new one in Sotkamo, and it’s not long before the church attracts a lively community. One thing’s for sure: life in the best village in the world is better than wallowing in the recession outside.

Deep in the heart of the forest in eastern Finland now lies an unusual oasis of peace and well-being. Over time, a few volunteers take refuge there, and establish a village community. They revive the habits of their ancestors, introduce self-sufficiency and return to a simpler way of life, far away from the decaying world. Welcome to the village where milk and honey flow!
